CHANDLER, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — Police are searching for suspects after a shooting in the parking lot of the Chandler Fashion Center on Monday evening. The shooting happened around 7 p.m. outside the mall between Harkins Theatres and Firestone Auto Center. Police say an incident broke out between a group of people and someone began shooting.
Surveillance video shows the suspects driving off before police arrived. Officers say nobody was hurt and it was not an active shooter situation. “There is no danger to the community or mall at this time,” said Chandler Sgt. Jason McClimans.
Over 25 officers rushed to the mall and found shell casings in the parking lot. Police say the mall is closed and will reopen tomorrow morning. Arizona’s Family news chopper was over the scene and saw a section of the parking lot taped off. Police cars were also near every entrance of the mall, while shoppers were huddled together.
McClimans confirmed some businesses closed and people were taking shelter. The mall was locked down before officers began evacuating people out. Officers say a description of the car and suspects won’t be released until more information is gathered.
This is the second police situation at a Valley mall in just a few days. On Friday, the Arizona Mills Mall in Tempe was evacuated after an armed man pointed a gun at another man and then ran into the mall. Officers and mall security quickly cleared everyone out but didn’t find the armed man. No injuries were reported, and the mall was reopened shortly afterward.
