Brent Pry names Grant Wells the starting QB

Virginia Tech Head Coach Brent Pryalong with Offensive Coordinator Tyler Bowenrecently declined to name a starting quarterback as the Hokies head deeper into fall camp, wanting to see what happened during the latest mini-scrimmage and full scrimmage.
With just over two weeks remaining until opening kickoff at Old Dominion, the Hokies have announced their starter according to multiple media outlets that are at Brent Pry’s Wednesday press conference, including David Cunningham.
Marshall transfer Grant Wells will lead the Hokies during the 2022 season as the starting quarterback, edging out senior transfer Jason Brownwho spent the past season at South Carolina.
A Charleston, WV, native, Wells transferred into Virginia Tech after serving as the starting quarterback for the Thundering Herd over the 2020 and 2021 seasons. During his time as a starting quarterback, he completed 64.3-percent of his throws (460/715) for 5,623 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also threw22 interceptions during his time in Conference USA with Marshall, a number that will clearly have to improve in Blacksburg.
He rushed for 237-yards and nine touchdowns during his two-year stint at Marshall.
Following his freshman season in 2020, Wells was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year with a league-leading 2,091 passing yards and 18 touchdowns. He also earned First Team All-Conference USA honors.
In 2021, Wells ranked 15th in the nation with 3,532-yards passing. He completed 66.4-percent of his passes for 16 touchdowns.
Earlier this summer, Pry said that the offense installed the new offensive scheme before fall camp.
“We actually installed our entire offense and defense again in June. They got a big piece of it in the winter, they obviously got most of it in the spring, and then we followed up and were able to maximize the time allotted each week and get our schemes in again in June.”
As a recruit, Wells was considered a three-star prospect in the 2019 class and the No. 8 player in West Virginia at the time of his signing with Marshall.
He chose Marshall over Charlotte.
