PATNA: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar-led grand alliance government will go for a floor test on the opening day of the two-day special session on Wednesday, to prove its majority in the assembly.
With the single-member AIMIM on Tuesday deciding to extend its support to the grand alliance government during the floor test, the number of MLAs supporting the government rose to 165 in the 243-member assembly that’s current effective strength is 241. Two seats are vacant.
Earlier, altogether 163 MLAs of seven parties and one independent legislator (Sumit Kumar Singh) extended their support to Nitish when he staked his claim to form the new government before the governor Phagu Chauhan on August 9, soon after he dumped the BJP and joined hands with the RJD-led grand alliance.
As the new government has support of altogether 165 MLAs from eight parties and one independent in the assembly with effective strength of 241, Nitish will not face any difficulty in achieving the magic figure of 121.
The eight political parties which are supporting the new government are RJD (79 MLAs), JD-U (45), Congress (19), CPI-ML (12), HAMS (4), CPI (2), CPM (2) and AIMIM (1). Besides these parties, Independent MLA and minister Sumit Kumar Singh also has extended his support to the Nitish government.
As eight parties are supporting the new government, the BJP, with its 76 MLAs, will be the single party on the opposition benches when the house will be assembled during the special session on Wednesday.
As per the list of business in the assembly on Wednesday, the CM’s proposal to seek the trust vote would be taken up in the house after the speaker Vijay Kumar Sinha’s opening address and tabling of the reports of different house committees.
However, the ruling JD(U) on Tuesday demanded that the no-confidence notice against the speaker shall be taken up at the first place and Sinha should not be allowed to preside over the house proceedings.
