In a recent video, Mainwaring detailed common mistakes that make your clothing look tacky.

“If you’re frustrated with the way your clothes look, here are five reasons why your clothes look cheap,” Mainwaring said.

The first feature you should remove from your wardrobe is gathered seams. Commonly used to disguise “problem areas,” the bulky pleats aren’t flattering.

“These really aren’t going to do anything for your body type,” Mainwaring explained. “If you want to look expensive, you want to go with something more tailored and clean lines.”

A blazer and fitted trousers are a much better way to emphasize your silhouette, she said.

“You can even pair the blazer with jeans too, to make it more casual,” Mainwaring suggested.

Even though the “cheugy” style of the early 2000s is back in fashion, she also warned viewers to stay away from embellishments, like rivets and rhinestones.

She showed a picture of a denim shirt with crystals embellished on the shoulders, chest, and buttons.

Everyone loves a little sparkle, but applying embellishments directly to your clothes looks unrefined, the blogger warned.

“If you want to stand out, then go with a simple shirt and make your jewelry stand out for you,” she said.

Her next tip might come as a surprise to anyone with a “sophisticated,” all-black wardrobe: ditch the dark cotton and jersey tops.

“After you wash them once, they kind of look cheap,” she explained.

Instead, Mainwaring said, “Always go with a lighter neutral, like white, greys, and blues.”

Lace is another fabric that can make you look “really cheap.”

“If done right, lace can look amazing,” Mainwaring said, but you’ll have to pay a premium to find the right look.

Instead, swap the finicky fabric for mesh. “Mesh is very simple, you can make a statement,” Mainwaring said.

The fabric can look cute or sexy, and it’s a lot less expensive to get mesh “right” than lace.

Finally, Mainwaring provided a savvy substitute for dated paisley prints.

“These prints are complicated,” she said, “so go with a simple print like the classic polka dot.”

Simpler patterns look classier, and as a bonus, a more subdued print allows you to accessorize however you want so your personal style shines through.
