NEW DELHI: Congress MP from Kerala Shashi Tharoor may contest the election for the party president’s post, a likely move that was reflected in a newspaper article he penned saying that the party polls were the first step towards rejuvenation of the organisation and that an open contest would strengthen the party and legitimise the incoming leader.
Tharoor’s comments were a subject of discussion in Congress circles as he made three important points – he welcomed the polls, lamented Rahul Gandhi’s refusal to take back the leadership, but asserted that a party should not be limited by the belief that only one family can lead it. Interestingly, he pushed the envelope by saying that the poll schedule should also have included elections for the CWC. However, the general belief is that Tharoor may not contest if Rahul or a member of the “first family” decides to enter the battle.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP did not comment on the issue when approached.
