India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047 is increasingly shaped by the pivotal role played by startups, according to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. Speaking at the Startup State Ranking Awards (SRF) function in New Delhi, Goyal emphasized the significant progress made in the startup sector over the last eight years, transforming what was once considered a novelty into an integral part of the national mainstream.

Official data reveals that the total number of unicorns in India has surged to 112, collectively valued at an impressive $350.71 billion. The landscape is evolving rapidly, with a diverse array of startups contributing to India’s economic growth and innovation. A group of four states – Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu – distinguished themselves as top performers among the ‘category A’ states, each with a population exceeding 10 million. Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh claimed the top spot among ‘category B’ states, those with a population less than 10 million.

As of December 31, 2023, the commerce and industry ministry reported a remarkable increase in registered startups, soaring from 400 in 2016 to an impressive 1,17,254 spanning 57 industry segments. Encouragingly, 48% of these startups boast at least one woman director, reflecting a positive trend towards gender diversity in entrepreneurship.

The Startup India initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 16, 2016, has played a pivotal role in fostering a robust startup ecosystem. Recognized startups have not only fueled economic growth but have also generated over 1.24 million jobs, with half of them emerging from Tier II and Tier III cities. India has now solidified its position as the third-largest unicorn nation globally, showcasing 112 entities across various segments, including e-commerce and fintech, enterprise tech, consumer services, media and entertainment, EdTech, and logistics.

During the awards ceremony, Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the substantial contributions made by startups in sectors such as medtech, fintech, agrotech, drones, and simulators. He particularly underscored the untapped potential of the tourism sector, urging entrepreneurs to explore innovative ideas for sustainable tourism.

Goyal expressed confidence in the entrepreneurial spirit of individuals, irrespective of age, urging them to actively participate in the startup ecosystem. Emphasizing that age should not be a barrier to engaging with new ideas and fostering innovation, he encouraged everyone to contribute their unique perspectives and ideas to the growth of India.
