Vyommitra—The Woman Robot Astronaut—Prepares for Launch Ahead of ISRO’s Gaganyaan Mission

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Space, Jitendra Singh, recently unveiled plans for the deployment of the Woman Robot Astronaut, ‘Vyommitra’, into space ahead of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) ambitious ‘Gaganyaan’ mission. This mission marks a significant milestone as India prepares for its first human-manned space flight, carrying Indian astronauts into the celestial realm.

Addressing the media in New Delhi, Singh outlined the timeline for these groundbreaking missions, stating that the uncrewed ‘Vyommitra’ mission is slated for the third quarter of this year, with the manned ‘Gaganyaan’ mission scheduled for launch in 2025.

Derived from the Sanskrit words ‘Vyoma’ meaning space and ‘Mitra’ meaning friend, ‘Vyommitra’ symbolizes a pioneering step in space exploration. This female robot astronaut boasts advanced capabilities, including monitoring module parameters, issuing alerts, and executing life support operations. It is designed to mimic human functions in the space environment and interact seamlessly with the life support system, facilitating critical tasks such as operating panels and responding to inquiries.

Singh emphasized the strategic significance of these missions, particularly in the context of India’s ambitious space program. He underscored the completion of key milestones, including the successful test flight of the Test Vehicle Flight TV D1 last year, aimed at qualifying the crew escape and parachute systems. Additionally, he highlighted the completion of human rating for the launch vehicle and the qualification of all propulsion stages, signifying the readiness of the project infrastructure.

As preparations intensify for the ‘Gaganyaan’ mission, which aims to demonstrate India’s human spaceflight capabilities, the deployment of ‘Vyommitra’ heralds a new era in space exploration. With plans to launch a crew of astronauts into a 400-kilometer orbit and safely return them to Earth by landing in India’s sea waters, the project epitomizes India’s aspirations for space exploration and scientific advancement.
