NEW DELHI: An AIIMS panel, constituted on the directions of the Supreme Courthas ruled out any error in the treatment provided to late Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa at Apollo hospital in Chennai.
The six-member panel was formed on November 30, 2021 to assist the Justice Arumugasamy Commission, which is probing the causes of her death.
Sources said the panel of doctors led by cardiologist Dr Sandeep Seth reviewed the medical records of Apollo hospital, Chennai. Recordings of radiological investigations were also reviewed.
The AIIMS panel concluded that Jayalalithaa was being treated for diabetes, vertigo, atopic dermatitis (itchy inflammation of the skin), irritable bowel syndrome, hypothyroid and chronic bronchitis prior to hospitalisation. The report by the panel to the Commission states the former CM was eating grapes, cakes and sweets prior to hospitalisation, quoting Dr Sivakumar who examined her on September 19, 2016. On September 22, 2016, an ambulance was called to the CM’s house. The doctors found the CM in an altered level of consciousness. Her vitals – saturation, pulse and BP – were also unstable.
She was rushed to the emergency wing of Apollo hospital where blood and imaging tests revealed crackles in both lungs which was suggestive of infection. She was put on non-invasive ventilation, insulin and antibiotic therapy, the report says.
Jayalalithaa suffered cardiac arrest on December 4. On December 5, the Apollo team and doctors from AIIMS declared her dead.
