How to wear the Y2K fashion in 2022 according to this fashion stylist
[ad_1]
If you don’t know by now, the one trend that keeps cropping up lately is the Y2K style. Fresh off my mind, the trend can be traced back to the early 2000s when socialites and party people Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie showed off their bright pink outfits, spaghetti tops, velour Juicy Couture tracksuits and rhinestone-everything accessories on their reality show, The Simple Life.
Another adopter of the trend was pop princess Britney Spearswho, at the peak of the aughts fashion, embodied the ‘tacky-chic’ style by wearing crop tops, low-rise jeans and clothing with lots of ‘bedazzling.’
Fast-forward to today, the trend gained momentum last year when the Gen Zs documented their OOTDs (outfits of the day) on TikTok, wearing bootcut jeans and silk scarf tops. Soon after, we started seeing brands like Miu Miu and Blumarine embracing the Y2K trend on the runways.
So how do you wear the Y2K trend without overdoing it? We speak to Andrea Wonga fashion stylist and consultant with over 15 years of fashion and styling experience about this trend.
Wong, who worked on the film Crazy Rich Asians, is pretty excited about the re-emergence of a certain trend, “My favourite trend to re-emerge with the resurgence of Y2K fashion is sheer clothing. There are so many ways to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe to add a bit of that sexy, peek-a-boo aesthetic. You can wear a see-through mesh or lace baby tee with a cute bralette underneath (in a pastel shade for true Y2K feels), or for a less revealing option, you can layer a silk camisole or slip dress over a transparent chiffon long-sleeve top.”

When it comes to versatile denim, Wong advises us on how to style them correctly: “Denim on denim was a huge Y2K trend (who could forget Britney and Justin’s double denim moment at the AMAs), but it can be quite a polarising trend. When styled correctly, it can look super chic and current. Try pairing an oversized denim jacket with low-rise jeans finished off with stiletto boots. Flared jeans with a denim cropped top or bralette would look great topped off with chunky heels and colourful sunglasses. Remember to keep the fabric’s colour consistent, so it works seamlessly as a complete outfit.”
Last but not least, we mustn’t forget an arm candy: “Your favourite It-bags from the turn of the millennium are back in a big way, from the iconic Fendi Baguette bag (which turns 25 this year) to Prada’s nylon mini hobo bags. As long as it’s cute, compact and fits snugly under the arm, it’s having its moment in the sun again.”
