Rapid grocery delivery firms must transform their business models in order to survive in a hugely competitive, fast changing space.

That’s the view of Brittain Ladd, a supply chain consultant and former Amazon executive.

“I was one of the first consultants to write about the topic of rapid grocery delivery (RGD). I wrote my first post in 2020,” he says in a LinkedIn post.

“Now that 2022 has arrived, I haven’t changed my mind on what it will take for RGD companies to find success. I continue to believe what I posted in 2020 remains correct.”

The future of the space cannot be focused only on groceries, he argues.

Consumers will soon begin to ask why they can receive their groceries in 15 minutes, but they can’t get a handbag, cosmetics, apparel, shoes, electronics etc within the same time period.

“The need for speed will be the spark that transforms retail and logistics,” he writes.

“Well led RGD companies will pivot and become ‘real-time retail delivery’ players that are capable of making deliveries across different categories, instead of only being focused on groceries. Quick commerce across all categories is a must have.”
