To say Virginia Tech’s wide receiver corps lacks experience would be an understatement. Outside of Kaleb SmithVirginia Tech’s wide receiver corps is mostly comprised of players who have yet to record more than a few catches in a Virginia Tech uniform.

The Hokies added some immediate help this offseason by the way of Temple wide receiver transfer Jadan Blue. Blue hauled in 169 receptions for 1,672-yards and 10 touchdowns during his career at Temple and should factor into Virginia Tech’s offense right away.

They also added North Carolina transfer Stephen Gosnellthough he was mostly a reserve during his time with the Tar Heels.

Simply put, Virginia Tech’s wide receiver unit is unproven but the entire unit has taken a step forward over the summer and early parts of fall camp according to Offensive Coordinator Tyler Bowen.

“You are watching Da’Wain (Da’Wain Lofton) take huge steps, I can see it in his confidence. Dallan (Dallan Wright) has had a good start to camp. Really, that entire group. Stephen Gosnell. I think those guys and what they did over the summer in the weight room, routes on air, everything they were doing on their own, some things we were able to do with them organized with the new NCAA rules, you can see that starting to show up in practice. I have really been impressed with the group as a whole in how they have improved from when we left spring ball to going into fall camp.”

During fall camp, Virginia Tech has also added a little more depth to the wide receiver room with part-time additions of guys like Connor Blumrick (tight end) and Keshawn King (running back).

King has recorded 11 receptions for 206-yards and one touchdown out of the backfield over the past three seasons.

“He’s got a unique skillset and that starts at running back, but we can deploy him. We can be in a personnel grouping where he can be in as a running back and maybe he flexes out and does some different things. He’s got some speed. He’s got some physical tools, so we have been playing around with that and seeing where we can utilize him in the offense.”
