Secondary coach Joe Whitt Jr. won’t travel with Cowboys for preseason opener vs. Broncos

Cowboys secondary coach/defensive passing game coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., said he’ll miss the first two preseason games with an undisclosed health issue. Whitt Jr., said he’s not allowed to stand on the sidelines during practices or games because of his health.

“I’m good I just can’t be on the field right now,” said the 44-year old Whitt. “If I get hit or whatever, it’s not the best thing for me. Sometimes we think we’re a little bit younger than what we are. And I’m not. We have a great staff. (Defensive quality control) Cannon Matthews, (Defensive backs coach) Al Harris have done a tremendous job and I don’t think they get the credit they deserve. They are outstanding coaches.”

Whitt hopes to return for the final preseason game, August 26 against Seattle. After the Cowboys released a statement about Whitt missing time, several family members reached out to him asking about his health.

Whitt decided to address reporters at the end of Tuesday’s practice.

“It’s more about treatment and recovery and not getting hit more than anything else,” he said. “I run around, I jump around and I’m active. I’m my own worst enemy sometimes.”

Injury update: CB Trevon Diggs (maintenance), S Jayron Kearse (back), WR Ty Fryfogle (undisclosed) and LB Luke Gifford (groin) missed practice. QB Will Grier (groin) WR CeeDee Lamb (maintenance) were limited participants. … T Amon Simon, TE Jeremy Sprinkle and RB Rico Dowdle returned to practices after health issues.
