The master of ‘Pleats Please’ – Legendary fashion designer Issey Miyake passed away at the age of 84

According to foreign media reports, the legendary Japanese fashion designer San Issey Miyake passed away on August 5 from cancer at the age of 84.

Miyake was born in 1938 in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. After graduating from Tama Art University, he went to France to study art. After graduating from Tama Art University, he went to France to study traditional haute couture techniques and design. He even worked with Hubert de Givenchy. After working with Hubert de Givenchy, he went to New York to study. In 1970, he returned to Tokyo and founded the Miyake Design Office. In 1973, the designer first participated in Paris Fashion Week, and by the 1980s, he was a member of the Parisian fashion industry. By then, Issey Miyake was working with Kawakyu and Rei Kawakubo. Miyake had become one of the most influential designers in Europe, alongside Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto. These masters of fashion are known for the peculiar aesthetics that are associated with Japanese designers.

The core of Issey Miyake’s entire brand lies in the construction of the material. He is known for the iconic collection “A Piece of Cloth”, where he tried to use a piece of cloth to create a complete garment. The most famous presentation of this concept is the 1990 A-POC (A Piece of Cloth) collection, which created a great sensation at the time. After all, compared to the traditional European production method, the A-POC (A Piece of Cloth) method that Miyake employed went completely against the grain of traditional practise. Instead of letting clothes restrict the human body, Miyake used fabrics to wrap the body, letting the body interpret the clothes’ silhouette that took shape in wrinkles and folds. In 1989, the wrinkled Pleats Please collection was born. It is still the brand’s most recognisable symbol. To this day, it is the brand’s undying classic collection.
