CHENNAI: Three masked men decamped with gold and cash worth Rs 15 crore from the branch of non-banking financial firm Fedbank at Arumbakkam in Chennai on Saturday after gagging and tying up two staff members and a security guard.
Police suspect the role of a former employee of Fedbank in the heist. Fedbank is a subsidiary of Federal Bank.
The trio gained an entry into the premises after giving a sedative-laced cool drink to the security guard. They tied him up when he fell unconscious. They tied up another bank employee before cornering the branch manager, Suresh, who was in his room. They tied him up and snatched the locker key from him. They collected cash and gold from the locker and put them in a bag before escaping on a two-wheeler.
Some residents saw the guard and the staff tied up in the office and alerted police.
Personnel from the Arumbakkam police station rushed to the spot. Additional commissioner of police T S Anbu, joint commissioner of police S Rajeswari, deputy commissioner of police of Anna Nagar C Vijaykumar and other senior police officers visited the spot.
Forensic officials collected fingerprints from the office. The police formed five special teams to nab the suspects.
