CHANDIGARH: With Punjab governor Banwarilal Purohit giving assent to the ‘One MLAOne Pension’ bill, the state government has issued a gazette notification. Tweeting about the governor’s nod to the bill, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann said “this will save a lot of tax for the public”.
Mann said the notification to implement ‘One MLA, One Pension’ would “revolutionise and reform the Indian political system.” He termed it a humble initiative by the AAP government to realise the dreams of our freedom fighters and national heroes.
Mann said the Punjab government expects to save around Rs 100 crore during its current tenure. “During the last 75 years these elected representatives have turned into political executives by drawing extravagant salaries and pensions. The entire burden was met by taxpayers. Their money was misused to fill the pockets of these leaders instead of being used for public welfare,” he said. Finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema added, “No more ‘Free ki Revdi’ to netas”.
As per new provisions, a former MLA will be paid a pension of Rs 60,000 per mensem plus dearness allowance. This would be irrespective of the number of terms the legislator had served as a member and the tenure of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. Also, when an ex-MLA turns 65 years, 75 years, and 85 years, the legislator will be entitled to an increase of 5%, 10% and 15% of the basic pension, respectively.
