SHIVAMOGGA: The row over removal of Hindi Mahasabha leader Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s photograph from the city’s hypermall has snowballed into a row leading to tension on Monday in the communally sensitive Malnad city.
The authorities have clamped prohibitory orders under section 144 of the IPC in Shivamogga and have increased patrolling in the sensitive areas. They have also detained a few youths after clashes between two groups at Ameer Ahmad circle following display of Savarkar’s photograph. A bunch of youths tried to display Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan’s photograph leading to tension forcing the Shivamogga district cops to baton charge the activists to control the situation.
Within minutes after the clashes, one youth is stabbed at Gandhi Bazar, which is located 200 meters from the clash site. As tension gripped the city, commercial establishments, which were celebrating Independence Day, downed their shutters while residents stayed indoors. The Shivamogga district administration cancelled the cultural events hosted to mark the event in the evening.
Shivamogga SP BM Laxmi Prasad told TOI that the prohibitory orders will be in place till the situation returns to normalcy. He said one youth Prem Singh, who hails from Rajasthan, has been stabbed. He is shifted to the McGann Hospital and undergoing treatment, he stated.
Trouble started in the afternoon when a bunch of activists opposed display of Savarkar’s photograph at the junction, which abuts a mosque. They tried to display Tipu’s photograph which another bunch of activists opposed. As they sat on a dharna at the spot, the cops moved in quickly and took Savarkar’s photograph to the jurisdictional police station and asked the activists to clear the spot. Within minutes the stabbing was reported.
The SP said that a bunch of youths are being questioned related to the stabbing incident.
This comes a day after the cops arrested one person following a complaint by the Shivamogga City Corporation accusing him of forcing the staff at the hypermall to remove Savarkar photograph displayed at the business hub. Some youths had opposed it leading to tension on Saturday.
Following tension in Shivamogga, prohibitory orders are also clamped in Bhadravathi, the industrial town, which is located 20 kms from Shivamogga.
