Tech opens 2022 campaign against William & Mary

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team opens the 2022 regular season by traveling to William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. on Thursday, Aug. 18 for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference match. Thursday’s game will air live on FloSports.

TOP NOTES FOR THE HOKIES

Opening the Season: Virginia Tech is 5-5-0 all-time against William & Mary, having won the past two matches against the Griffins. The Hokies are 18-7-3 in season openers, having won eight of their last 10 season openers (8-1-1). The Hokies last defeated Liberty at the 2021 season opener with shutout 3-0.

Griffins Campaign: William & Mary ended their 2021 season with a record of 4-9-3 overall, winning two of their last 10 matches. The Griffins started the 2022 preseason with 2-1 win over Richmond, and 1-1 tie against George Mason.  The Griffins return senior goalkeeper Zoe Doughty. Doughty was named the 2021 CAA Goalkeeper of the Year after saving 93.2% of shots and average 5.71 saves per game.

Eyes on the Prize: Virginia Tech has the drive to make the program’s 13th NCAA tournament appearance this fall. The Hokies return with star studded talent including top goal scorer, Tori Powell (15 goals, 40 points). Powell became the 11th player in the program to score a hat trick, first against a power five opponent. Emma Pelkowski had 8 assists in 2021 and tied the fifth best single season assists mark in program history. Starting 36 of 36 matches in her career, Alia Skinner makes her back to the pitch as the lead goalkeeper for the Hokies. Skinner has seen over 3,100 minutes of game play and has 156 saves (.776%). Newcomer Taylor Price led the team in preseason goals, scoring two in the first scrimmage of the year.

• The Hokies will open Thompson Field on Sunday, Aug. 21, for their Welcome Home Hokies match against Indiana. The first 200 students who arrive early to Sunday’s 12 p.m. match will receive a free Hokies T-shirts.
