NEW DELHI: Pakistan police have arrested industrialist Sheikh Danish and his daughter for allegedly being involved in the brutal torture and sexual harassment of a medical girl student in the Punjab province.
Police said that Danish, a wealthy business tycoon and director of a textile firm, allegedly attacked his daughter’s friend, a dentistry student, for refusing to marry him.
The police swung into action against the suspects after videos of the brutal torture went viral on August 9, a day after the incident. In the video, the suspects are seen thrashing the girl. The victim’s head and eyebrows were shaved off and she was made to lick the slippers of the prime suspect’s daughter, said the police.
Police booked 15 suspects for abduction, torture, extortion and sexual assault. “Police have arrested seven suspects, including Danish and his daughter, and raids are underway to arrest the remaining suspects,” a spokesperson of Punjab police said.
Danish’s alleged wife and his bodyguards have also been arrested, and the police seized an assortment of weapons and illegal liquor from the businessman’s residence.
The business tycoon has denied all charges against him, claiming that he was being blackmailed by the victim.
The victim has told the police that Danish’s daughter Anna Ali was her classmate. “Anna’s father Sheikh Danish proposed marriage but my family and I rejected the proposal. Danish was my father’s age and when I told this to Anna, she got furious at me,” the victim said, adding that Danish and the other suspects barged into her house on August 8 and attempted to force her into accepting the marriage proposal.
The victim’s brother rejected the proposal following which he and his sister were thrashed. They were then forcibly taken to Danish’s house where they were tortured and the victim was sexually harassed. “The prime suspect (Danish) then took her to another room where he sexually humiliated her and recorded the act,” the FIR said.
A medical report of the victim stated that torture marks were found on multiple parts of her body along with injuries on the face, eyes, elbows and hands. The report, however, did not confirm rape.
The case has sparked anger in Pakistan with people demanding stern action against Danish, who has high political connections, and all those involved in the incident.
As the prime suspect was being brought to court on August 19, a group of angry lawyers caught hold of Danish and thrashed him with shoes. Later, the court sent Danish to 2-day police custody.
