RAIPUR: Crying persistently at night cost a three-year-old girl her life when her drunkard father smashed her face with his elbow, breaking her nose and killing her on the spot, police in Chhattisgarh’s Ambikapur town, 330km from Raipur, said on Saturday.
To make her death look like an accident, the parents then allegedly flung her body in a river. Both parents have been arrested, and their younger child, a three-month-old boy, is now at the mercy of a shelter home.
The spine-chilling incident took place on the night of August 15 in Manpat locality of the town. The couple, Pramod and Sumitra Manjhireported their elder daughter Swarm missing the next day.
In their statement to police, they said that Vimla woke up in the middle of the night and began crying. They said they consoled her, and told her to go back to sleep, but after some time, they realized she had vanished from the bed. They told police that the door was open and they suspected abduction.
Police immediately lodged a missing person’s report and set up a team to look for the little girl. While interviewing relatives and neighbours, investigators began suspecting the parents’ involvement. Some said that the couple reported Vimla missing only after neighbours began asking about her.
When the couple was questioned separately, their statements didn’t match and it seemed they were trying to mislead the investigation, police said.
On Friday, the parents were summoned and questioned again. This time, they admitted to killing their little girl and throwing her body in the river, police said.
In their confessional statement to police, they said that Pramod had returned home drunk that night and wanted to “sleep in peace”, but the girl’s continuous crying annoyed him and he hit her hard on the nose, causing her death. The child’s mother joined Pramod in the crime and they decided to throw her body in the nearby Ghunghutta river, police said. A search party found Vimla’s body from the riverbank and the couple was arrested.
The Manjhis have a three-month-old baby who needs to be taken care of. The newborn is now in a government shelter and police have said they will hand him over to any family member that agrees to look after him.
