PATNA: JD(U)’s national executive and national council will be brainstorming for the first time since snapping ties with NDA on September 3-4 amid growing hype about Bihar chief minister and party founder Nitish Kumar emerging as a prime ministerial challenger to Narendra Modi in 2024.
JD(U) national general secretary Afaque Ahmad Khan told TOI on Sunday the focus of the meetings would be organisational issues, a proposed membership drive and assembly elections in some states.
More than 300 delegates, including the party’s national office-bearers, MPs, MLAs, state presidents and other senior functionaries from 23 states and UTs would participate in the national council meeting, he said.
Both meetings are expected to endorse the party’s recent decision to break ties with BJP. The national executive could also approve the schedule for JD(U)’s organisational elections for the next three-year term.
Although Nitish has often dismissed the likelihood of him being the opposition’s PM face in 2024, both his party and lost-and-found ally RJD have warmed up to the idea that the CM is “PM material”, if not a contender yet for the top post. JD(U) national president Rajeev Ranjanalias Lalan Singh, said his party was open to it if other opposition parties backed Nitish as a prime ministerial candidate.
JD(U)’s Bihar unit also has called a meeting of its state executive body at the same venue on September 3, hours before the national executive body meet.
