On Sunday, Texas Tech announced that senior Tyler Shough would be the team’s starting quarterback to begin the season.
“Tyler has played well and put our offense in position to be effective consistently throughout camp, which has earned him the right to be our starting quarterback,” head coach Joey McGuire said in a statement released on Sunday.
“Tyler has a great football IQ and has really captured what we want this offense to look like with the type of responsibility we put on the quarterback.
In four games with the Red Raiders last season, Shough threw for 872 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. His first season with Texas Tech was cut short after suffering a broken collarbone against Texas.
Despite Shough being named the starter to begin the season, McGuire has been adamant that Behren Morton and Donovan Smith will also see reps at quarterback.
“We fully intend for Red Raider fans to see all three of these QBs throughout the season,” McGuire said.
“This is as gifted as a room as I’ve ever seen, and I’m willing to put the depth of our quarterback position against anyone else in the country.”
Shough will be the starter on September 3 when the Red Raiders begin their season against Murray State at Jones AT&T Stadium.
