NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday sought response from the Gujarat government on the bail plea of social activist Teesta Setalvad who was arrested in a forgery and criminal conspiracy case lodged against her pertaining to the 2002 Gujarat riots.
The case was registered against her and some former IPS officers after the apex court had in June questioned the role of disgruntled officers of Gujarat and some activists to keep the pot boiling in 2002 riots case for the last 16 years for ulterior design.
As the apex court had said that they should be put in dock and proceedings be initiated against them in accordance with law, the Gujarat police sprung into action just a day after the order and arrested her. The court had passed the order while dismissing plea of widow of slain Congress leader Zakia Jafri seeking probe against senior government functionaries on larger conspiracy behind the communal riots.
As she was denied bail by trial court and the HC put her plea for hearing for September 19, The winters moved the apex court for interim relief.
