Johnson is known for her flamboyant sense of style.
Betsey has been influencing the fashion industry with her original designs since the 1960s.
Her ability to change with the times while keeping her designs pure has not gone unnoticed.
Betsey was born in Connecticut and spent her childhood in dance classes.
Her aspirations to be a dancer and her love for costumes laid the foundation for Betsey’s creativity and inspiration, which is still evident in her designs today.
In 1964, Betsey entered the New York fashion scene by winning Mademoiselle magazine’s Guest Editor Contest.

One year later, she landed the top designer position for Paraphernalia, a clothing boutique that at the time housed the hottest young London designers.
What would soon become known as Betsey’s trademark look began its formulations here: sexy silhouettes, hippie inspired flowing fabrics, whimsical detailing and a fabulous fit.
Betsey continues to keep a strong foothold in the fashion industry with no signs of letting up anytime soon.
Beautiful in blue: Actress Larsen Thompson, 21, of Pearl and American Cherry fame was also there to fete Johnson
She has been called ‘the original wild child.’
Though she is trying to save as many of her old pieces as possible, she admits her vault isn’t as full as she’d like because her daughter and granddaughter are always borrowing things and never give them back.
She told the New York Post newspaper’s Page Six column in 2019: ‘I’m saving as much as I can. My daughter and granddaughter are in all my stuff. I never get my stuff back when they borrow them. I will be dead before that happens.’

Betsey picked up the Style Icon Award at the 21st annual ACE Awards and is relieved to no longer be considered a ‘joke’.

The creative talent also admitted k she was ‘frightened’ about ageing.

Spend the night: There was a camper in pink and white in the back
And the bear goes on: Johnson also did the splits, which she often does at the end of her shows
And the US designer admitted she doesn’t feel like a fashion icon because these days she is a ‘comfortable slob’.
She told the New York Daily News newspaper: ‘I’m living in Malibu now, so it’s usually the same T-shirt.
‘I am such a comfortable slob. I never dress fashion. I never wear anything but flip flops, a big T-shirt – usually Bowie or rock ‘n’ roll and my lipstick.
‘I don’t even wear all that make-up s**t anymore. Just fake eyelashes.’
Not a bad idea: The hunky waiters wore pink suits and no shirts as they handed out champagne
Her style: Johnson is best known for her feminine and whimsical designs. Many of her designs are considered over the top and embellished
