RANCHI: The ED on Wednesday conducted raids at 17 places in Jharkhand, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Delhi NCR in connection with illegal mining, money laundering and suspected criminal nexus between the Jharkhand administration, businessmen and politicians.
Wednesday’s raids took a new turn when ED sleuths recovered two AK-47 rifles along with 60 live cartridges from the residence of Ranchi-based businessman Prem Prakashwho has been earlier interrogated by the agency. However, Ranchi police were quick to claim that the weapons seized by ED actually belonged to two of their personnel.
Prakash is known for having close business relations with people in the power corridors, in different governments. ED is learnt to have recovered documents as well.
The raids were conducted at 11 places in Ranchi, including Prakash’s flat in Vasundhara Apartmenthis residence ‘Shailodaya’ near the Harmu Chowk, his office in Harmu, residences of chartered accountant Jaishankar Jaipuriar in Ashok Nagar and Morhabadi, residence of another chartered accountant Anita Kumari at Lalpur and house of coal trader MK Jha near Argora Chowk.
Jaipuriar has been looking after accounts of JMM and a few of its politicians for the past 12 years.
Raids were also conducted at the residence of one Ratan Srivastavamaternal uncle of Prakashat Sasaram in Bihar. Sources said that search and survey operations were also carried out at a few offices and residences of Prakash’s relatives in Chennai and NCR.
At a time when raids were still on, Godda BJP MP Nishikant Dubey tweeted that ED has recovered AK-47 from Prakash’s address. He described Prakash as an associate of CM Soren’s family friend-cum-businessman Amit Agarwal. Seeking an NIA probe, Dubey termed Prakash as the “kingpin” of Naxals and terrorists.
JMM on the other hand claimed that Prakash had no ties with CM Soren, instead he was close to former CM and BJP politician Raghubar Das.
In a press note, Ranchi police said that it was because of rain on Tuesday that two police guards kept their automatic rifles with a staff of Prakash known to them.
“On Wednesday when they went to collect their weapons, they found that the rifles have been confiscated by the ED during raids. We are initiating the process to reclaim the weapons,” the note said, adding that the policemen in question have been suspended.
