National Conference to contest all 90 assembly seats alone in J&K | India News

SRINAGAR: The National Conference resolved on Wednesday to fight future assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir alone. The NC’s statement suggests the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration may be near its end.
NC will not ally with any constituent of the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), the party’s provincial committee members resolved unanimously and said that they should contest all 90 assembly seats of the UT of Jammu & Kashmir.
The PAGD, an amalgam of five parties — NC, PDPAwami National Conference, CPI(M) and CPI — was formed after the nullification of the special status of J&K after August 5, 2019. It was constituted to fight for the restoration of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution as it existed on August 4, 2019.
“The participants present in the meeting expressed dismay over the recent statements, audio jingles & speeches made by some constituents of the PAGD targeting JKNC. They felt that it does not contribute to the overall unity of the amalgam,” the party tweeted.
The party also denounced the unfair treatment meted out to it in the PAGD and demanded an immediate course correction by alliance constituents.
“Only way to protect J&K’s identity is to first register and cast your vote in huge numbers. Provincial committee members unanimously resolved that JKNC should prepare and fight all 90 seats,” NC leader Omar Abdullah said.
To a question, NC MP Hasnain Masoodi said PAGD was never an electoral alliance. “We have come together on the basis of ideology, it was never an electoral alliance. Every party in PAGD wants restoration of the August 5 position, restoration of our constitutional guarantees. Yes, in case when assembly elections are announced, parties can then decide whether to go together or separately,” Masoodi added.
Though a PDP spokesman said the formation of the PAGD was never for fighting elections in alliance, the amalgam contested local bodies and DDC elections together and even distributed seats to constituent parties after a meeting of amalgam leaders in 2020.
