Blue Raiders travel to Knoxville to open 2022-23 season

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee men’s tennis open their 2022-23 season this weekend as they travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to compete in the University of Tennessee Hidden Duals from Sept. 16-18.

The tournament will consist of matches in singles and doubles in a format with a similar style to a spring collegiate dual match. No team scores will be recorded, but matches count for each individual player and doubles team’s rankings.

Three teams are competing along with MTSU in Knoxville: Tennessee, Columbia, Illinois, and North Carolina. Four of the programs in the hidden duals finished the 2021-22 season in the ITA Top 30.

There will be a few new faces playing for the Blue Raiders this weekend. Freshmen Ondrej Horak, Marcel Kamrowskiand Shu Matsuoka will be playing their first collegiate matches.

“It will be a really strong tournament playing against top 30 teams,” assistant coach Andrea Caligiana said. “For the freshmen, this tournament will be against strong competition to help them to feel what college tennis is about. They have been working really hard and this group will be huge for us over the next four years. We are excited to watch them compete!”

The Blue Raiders return several key pieces from last year’s top 20 squad in sophomore Oskar Brostrom Poulson as well as graduate students in Pavel Motl and Francisco Rocha. The Blue Raiders ended the 2021-22 season with the most wins and the best overall record in program history. MTSU advanced to the Second Round of NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history in the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
