Aberg falls at U.S. Amateur in Round of 64

PARAMUS, New Jersey – Ludvig Aberg was eliminated from the 122nd U.S. Amateur Championship in a 1 UP loss to Ricky Castillo in a Round of 64 match that came down to the final hole on Wednesday at The Ridgewood Country Club.

A rising Texas Tech senior, Aberg advanced out of stroke play by shooting 4-over-par with a 74 on Tuesday at Arcola Country Club after he began the tournament with a 71 on Monday at The Ridgewood Country Club. His match against Castillo was even going to the final hole after Aberg had made a birdie the par-5, 591-yard No. 17 hole. Castillo, a senior at Florida, made par on 18 to take the match with Aberg bogeying.

The Round of 32 and Round of 16 will be play on Thursday, the quarterfinals on Friday and semifinals on Saturday. The 36-hole championship match is set to begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday. Peacock and Golf Channel will provide coverage throughout the event.

Along with Aberg, Baard Forest, Sandy Scott and Matthew Comegys represented Tech but missed the cut after stroke play.

Aberg is coming off an All-American junior season where he was named the Ben Hogan Award winner. He won the 2022 Big 12 Championship and was 11th at the NCAA Championships through stroke play. A rising senior from Sweden, Aberg also won The Prestige during his third season at Tech. He is currently at No. 2 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and PGA TOUR University rankings. Along with collegiate events, Aberg played in PGA events at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, The RSM Classic and Valero Texas Open within the past year.

Aberg finished fifth this summer at The Amateur Championship in England and also helped the international team to a win at the Arnold Palmer Cup.

Texas Tech is set to begin the 2022-23 season at the Frederica Cup on Sept. 7-8 at St. Simons Island, Georgia.
