Red Raiders open first preseason camp under McGuire

Texas Tech kicked off its preseason practices Friday morning with a nearly two-hour workout at the Football Training Facility. It was the first of 21 practices for the Red Raiders leading into their game-week preparations for the Sept. 3 opener against Murray State.
“We had a great first day,” head coach Joey McGuire said. “We had good energy and got a lot of reps in, which is a key part of our process. We need to bring that same energy throughout camp, but I could tell our guys were fired up for today and it showed.”
The Red Raiders will spend their first two practices in only helmets as part of the NCAA-mandated acclimation period. McGuire will transition practices to shells on Sunday (soft pads) before moving to Texas Tech’s first full-pad workout next Wednesday.
McGuire will place the Red Raiders through two preseason scrimmages each of the next two Saturdays, with the first coming under the Jones AT&T Stadium lights on Aug. 13. Those two scrimmages, McGuire said Thursday during his Reporting Day press conference, would separate what he considers a deep roster in making the final depth chart preparations.
