TOP NOTES FOR THE HOKIES
• Taking Down the Big Ten: Virginia Tech is 2-1-0 all-time against Indiana, having won the past two matches against the Hoosiers in 2015 (2-1) and 2016 (3-0). The Hokies are 12-12-2 against current Big Ten schools, having won their last Big Ten matchup against Ohio State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament (3-1).
• Indiana: Indiana starts the 2022 campaign 0-0-1 after playing West Virginia on the road. The Mountaineers defense kept the Hoosiers down to one shot on goal in their season opener. When starting, goalkeeper Jamie Gerstenberg has allowed one or fewer goals in only one of her last 17 matches and tied the program’s record with nine shutouts as a freshman in 2021. Indiana is coming back from a 9-5-4 season having missed out on a berth to the NCAA tournament. In the ACC, the Hoosiers last played Norte Dame in a tied 0-0 match in 2021.
• Virginia Tech: Hokies started the campaign with four goals in the season opener against William & Mary. The Hokies last scored four or more goals in a season-opener in 2014 against VCU (6-0). Junior Tori Powell came out strong scoring the first Hokies goal of the season 14 minutes into the game. Powell went on to make her second goal of the game with 10 minutes of play. Freshman Taylor Price has quickly made her presence known on the team scoring her first regular-season goal. Price led the Hokies in preseason goals with two in the first exhibition game. Returning midfielder Emma Pelkowski kicked in the game winning goal with a rebound into the net marking her first goal of the season. Goalkeeper Lauren Hargrove took over as goalie with 9:00 left in the first, denying the Tribe from making any additional goals in the second half.
