NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said the 148-day long ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ is a “spiritual journey” for him and expressed firm conviction in secularism and social justice, as he sought to quell doubts among the civil society members to seek their participation in the nationwide walkathon.
Designed as the Congress outreach to grassroot activists for the Yatra starting on September 7, Rahul was bombarded with questions about his party’s stance on critical issues that are under attack under the BJP rule.
At one point, it is learnt, some members even said Congress’s weaknesses and mistakes have resulted in the growth of BJP to the point that there is a repressive rule in the country. It is learnt that Congress was asked to apologise for those mistakes. Some even said that many of the laws being used for oppression were brought in by Congress.
Rahul reportedly said he was ready for criticism and was not seeking unconditional support, even as he urged the civil society to join hands in the fight against BJP-RSS.
“This is a political yatra, but it is also a spiritual journey for me. I know uniting the country is a long battle and I am ready for that. This yatra is a tapasya,” he remarked.
The interactive session, attended by the big names of voluntary sector Aruna Roy, Yogendra YadavBezwada Wilson, Anjali Bharadwaj, D Mahadeva, among others, was followed by a statement by Yadav that the group of around 150 organisations and movements had decided to “engage” with the Yatra.
When a participant told Rahul that he was not fighting strongly enough, the Congress leader responded that he had fought many battles against BJP, and Congress defeated it in Rajasthan, MP and Chhattisgarh. But he lamented that “big money” toppled the Congress government in MP. He underlined that there was need for new tools to fight BJP. The Congress leader told the group that the purpose behind the Yatra was to spell out that RSS ideology is dividing the country.
