NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday made changes in the Supreme Court Judges Rules, 1959, to entitle former Chief Justices of India a rent-free Type-VII bungalow in Delhi for six months, round the clock security, chauffeur and secretarial assistance, for one year from their date of retirement.
A notification issued by the ministry of law and justice said as per the changes effected in the Rules, either the SC or the concerned HC would provide a chauffeur and secretarial assistance to all retired CJIs and SC judges for a period of one year.
This means, only CJI N V Ramana, who retires on August 26, would be eligible among former CJIs to avail both the rent free accommodation, secretarial services and round the clock security. Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi has already been given round the clock security cover since November 2019 after a bench headed by him had pronounced the Ayodhya land dispute verdict. Those SC judges who retired less than a year ago would be entitled to chauffeur and secretarial services.
For a year from retirement, a CJI would be entitled to round the clock security cover and personal security guard for a period of one year. The notification also entitled the retired CJI and SC judges access to ceremonial lounges at airports and protocol services.
