PANAJI: Goa CM Pramod Sawant on Sunday said that the Sonali Phogat murder case would be handed over to the CBI, and that he would speak to DGP Jaspal Singh to initiate the process.
Phogat, a Haryana BJP functionary and Tiktok star, died in Goa on Tuesday (August 23). Her family then met Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar and demanded the murder investigation be moved to the CBI, following which Khattar called his Goa counterpart.
“The Haryana CM called me and urged me to hand over the case,” Sawant told TOI. “I told him we don’t have any problem.” However, DGP Jaspal Singh said: “I have not got any instruction from the CM yet.”
Goa Police registered two separate cases in connection with Phogat murder — a murder case and a narcotics case. In the murder case, two of Phogat’s aides, Sudhir Sangvan and Sukhwinder Singhhave already been arrested and remanded in 10-day police custody. In the narcotics case, three people have been arrested so far.
Goa Police had initially registered an unnatural death case. “The preliminary investigation has revealed that her death was due to a cardiac arrest,” Sawant had said then. As the police were reluctant to register a murder case, Phogat’s brother demanded a CBI inquiry. Later, after the portmortem report, they registered a murder case.
