Cal Men’s, Women’s Cross Country Head To Riverside Saturday
BERKELEY – California cross country returns to the course on Sept. 17 at the UCR Invitational. The action will take place at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course beginning at 7:15 a.m. for the women’s 6,000-meter run, followed by the men’s 8,000-meter race at 7:50 a.m.
Live results for both races can be found here.
The men’s squad enters Saturday’s competition coming off a second-place team finish at the USF Invite on Sept. 3. Caden Carney paced the Bears, claiming fourth place overall in his collegiate cross country debut with a time of 25:04.5. Garrett MacQuiddy crossed the finish line next in sixth place (25:12.0), followed by Countries Lee who took eighth place (25:12.7).
The women’s team took eighth-place overall at the season-opener, led by Ellie Black who was the top-Cal finisher in her first race as a Golden Bear. Black finished the race in 22:03.8 to clinch 22nd place with fellow Bears Natalie Weiner (22:53.3) and Lucy Hurt (22:57.7) taking 41st and 44th place, respectively.
The Bears’ young roster will once again represent the Blue & Gold this Saturday with nine freshmen from both the men’s and women’s teams combined set to toe the line at the UCR Invite.
The men’s squad will look to build upon its momentum following the USF Invite, with Carney, MacQuiddy and Lee all making a return to the lineup for the 8,000-meter competition.
On the women’s side, the top three Cal finishers at the USF Invite – Black, Weiner and Hurt – will also once again run the 6,000-meter race. They will be joined by Claire Yerby who will be running her season debut at the UCR Invite. Yerby was consistently among the women’s top-five finishers last season and she clinched her personal best in the 6,000-meter at the 2021 Sac State Invite (22:33.6).
“I’m really excited to get back to racing this weekend,” Yerby said. “Watching everyone race at the USF Invite made me excited for us going forward and I can’t wait to join them on the course.”
“Going into this race we are trying to focus on running as a pack so we can all feed off each other’s energy and work together,” Yerby added. “We are also taking this race as an opportunity to get used to this course because we will be back here in October for the Pac-12 Championships.”
