Kharge Condemns Shah: Accuses Police of Empowering BJP Workers During Rahul Gandhi’s Yatra in Assam

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who actively participated in the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam on Sunday, has raised serious concerns regarding the security lapses during the Yatra in a letter addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In the letter, Kharge pointed out a series of incidents that he claims demonstrate the Assam Police’s failure to provide adequate security to the Yatra participants, including Rahul Gandhi, who is entitled to Z+ security.

Kharge’s primary allegation is that the Assam Police appeared to prioritize safeguarding BJP posters over ensuring a secure passage for the Yatra. One incident he highlighted involved an assault on the Congress’ social media team and the vehicle of party general secretary Jairam Ramesh by BJP workers in Sonitpur. Ramesh, in response, shared a video of the alleged attack and attributed it to BJP cadres influenced by Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Additionally, Kharge brought attention to an incident on January 21, where Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah sustained injuries during an alleged attack on the party’s outreach program in Nagaon district. The Congress president, who joined the Yatra himself, claimed that the Assam Police “systematically allowed” BJP workers to breach Rahul Gandhi’s security cordon. Expressing disappointment, he emphasized the lack of arrests and investigations into these reported incidents.

Despite ample evidence available in the public domain, Kharge noted that none of the alleged miscreants had been arrested, and in many instances, investigations had not been initiated. In the letter, he urged the Union Home Minister’s intervention to ensure the Chief Minister of Assam and the Director General of Police take necessary steps to prevent any untoward incidents during the Yatra that could lead to harm to Rahul Gandhi or other members of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

Meanwhile, in a countermove, the Assam Police took suo motu action by registering an FIR against Rahul Gandhi and other leaders on Tuesday. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that the FIR was based on charges of “wanton acts of violence.” The alleged acts of violence occurred when party supporters and leaders reportedly broke barricades and clashed with police personnel, deviating from the approved route in their attempt to enter Guwahati.

The situation has escalated into a political standoff, with both the Congress and the BJP trading accusations. Kharge’s letter serves as a formal expression of the Congress party’s dissatisfaction with the security arrangements and demands swift action to ensure the safety of its leaders during the ongoing Yatra. The FIR against Rahul Gandhi and others adds a legal dimension to the conflict, potentially deepening the political rift between the two parties in Assam. As the Yatra progresses, all eyes will be on how the authorities handle the security concerns and the legal implications surrounding the incidents.

The exchange between Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Union Home Minister Amit Shah underscores the heightened tension surrounding the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam. Kharge’s detailed account of security lapses and alleged partisan behavior by the Assam Police has put the spotlight on the broader issue of political clashes in the region. The letter not only seeks accountability but also aims to draw attention to what the Congress perceives as a deliberate undermining of the Yatra’s security.

The incidents highlighted by Kharge, especially the alleged assault on party members and the breach of security for Rahul Gandhi, have raised questions about the impartiality of law enforcement in the state. The specific claim that Assam Police prioritized safeguarding BJP paraphernalia over ensuring the safety of the Yatra participants adds a layer of political intrigue to the narrative.

As the Yatra continues, the Congress party is using this opportunity to not only rally support for its cause but also to frame the narrative around the challenges it faces in a politically charged atmosphere. The call for the intervention of the Union Home Minister suggests that the Congress leadership is seeking a high-level inquiry into the incidents and a reassessment of the security protocols in place.
