Farmer Leader Lashes Out at AAP Govt; SKM Declares ‘Black Friday’ in Wake of Youth’s Tragic Death
Farmer Leader Launches Scathing Attack on AAP Govt; SKM Declares ‘Black Friday’ in Protest Over Youth’s Tragic Death
The death of a young farmer during clashes with security forces at the interstate border of Punjab and Haryana has reignited the flames of the farmers’ protest, with the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) announcing their participation in a ‘Black Friday’ protest. This development underscores the continued fervor of the agrarian movement, which has been ongoing since the enactment of the now-repealed three farm acts.
In response to the tragic incident, the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee criticized the Punjab government for its failure to file an FIR regarding the protester’s death, accusing them of disrespecting the martyrdom of the deceased. Despite discussions with the Punjab government regarding the demands for justice and recognition of the deceased sacrifice, the authorities have yet to provide satisfactory responses, leading to further disillusionment among the farming community.
In the wake of the tragedy, Punjab’s chief minister announced financial compensation and a government job for the victim’s family, albeit this gesture has not quelled the growing discontent among them. The SKM has called for intensified protests, including a “Jan Aakrosh” rally, a nationwide tractor rally on February 26, and a mahapanchayat in Delhi’s Ramlila Ground on March 14.
Meanwhile, tensions escalate as the Haryana Police warns of stringent measures against protestors, including property seizure and bank account attachment for damage to government and private property. Despite these warnings, thousands of farmers continue to camp at Khanauri and Shambhu borders, demanding legal guarantees for minimum support price (MSP) for crops and farm debt waiver.
The Congress party has called for a special session of Parliament to address the ‘ grievances, while Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda emphasizes the need for further dialogue to reach a consensus. Union Minister Anurag Thakur reiterated the government’s willingness to engage in talks with protesting farmers, reaffirming their commitment to welfare.
As the farmers’ agitation persists, it underscores the deep-rooted concerns within the agricultural sector and the urgent need for meaningful dialogue and concrete action to address their demands. The coming days are crucial as stakeholders on both sides navigate the path towards resolution and reconciliation.
The demand for justice for the deceased farmer, coupled with calls for accountability from state authorities, reflects the deep sense of injustice felt within the farming community. The failure of the Punjab government to address these concerns promptly has only served to exacerbate tensions and fuel further dissent.
In response to the escalating situation, the Haryana Police’s warning of stringent measures against protestors highlights the growing apprehension among authorities. However, such measures risk escalating tensions further and may undermine efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
Amidst these developments, the Congress party’s call for a special session of Parliament and the Union Agriculture Minister’s acknowledgment of the need for continued dialogue offer glimmers of hope for a constructive way forward. It is imperative for all stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue and work towards addressing the underlying issues driving the protests.
