Space fashion by Balenciaga, Giambattista Valli, Iris van Herpen. Paco Rabanne, Armani Prive, Moschino is a new trend on international catwalks

In February, Jeremy Scott sent a literal spacesuit down the runway to open the Moschino show, with a backdrop resembling 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The recent deluge of intergalactic fashion speaks to a world that is significantly transformed, and one that still feels unstable. Armouring ourselves for the next era seems prudent, as Louis Vuitton’s cruise collection from May showed.

Models were dressed as warrior women, in sculpted PVC, hooded dresses and studded belts, looking as if they belonged on another planet. Jacquemus’ AW22 show, set among the salt plains of Camargue, had a similarly other-worldly energy. Simon Porte Jacquemus told Vogue the collection was about “the obsession to start from nothing”.

And isn’t that exactly what space travel is? The quest to find the truly unknown? Fewer than 600 people have set foot outside the Earth’s atmosphere, making it the most exclusive front row ever.

But how to wear this trend back on Earth? Start with pops of metal – a belt with a large gold or silver buckle is a chic way to cinch the waist. Pair a bomber jacket in velvet or silk with flat leather boots.

Exaggerate shoulders with oversized blazers. Look for jumpsuits in silk and jersey for evening wear, and always go one size up – because nobody, even Jeff Bezos, can pull off a too-tight jumpsuit. That’s really reaching for the stars.
