NYC Weekend Travel Guide: How To Get Around The City August 13-14

NEW YORK CITY — Whether staying in the city or hopping off to the beach — rerouted subways, street closures and train delays are ready to disrupt New Yorkers weekend travel plans.Patch is here to help.

Weekend Subway Changes

The MTA reports there will be changes on 17 subway lines this weekend that include reduced service, localized express trains and the dreaded shuttle bus replacement.

Getting Out Of Town? Here’s Metro-North and LIRR Changes:

Far Rockaway – Stations Skipped, Special Schedule

Trains skip Locust Manor, Laurelton, and Rosedale in both directions Aug 12 – 15, and Aug 19 – 22, Fri 11:30 PM to Mon 4:00 AM

Bus service will be available between Jamaica, Locust Manor, Laurelton, Rosedale, and Valley Stream, connecting with trains at both Jamaica and Valley Stream.

The last trains to make the stops are the 10:43 PM from Far Rockaway and the 11:09 PM from Atlantic Terminal on Friday night. Service resumes with the 3:58 AM from Long Beach and the 5:12 AM from Atlantic Terminal on Monday morning.

For bus departure times, view the special timetable for the Far Rockaway or Long Beach Branches. Due to the nationwide bus driver shortage, school buses may supplement our regular coach bus service. There is testing for a new signal system near Jamaica.

Eastbound trains leave Atlantic Terminal at :40 past each hour, 18 minutes later than normal Aug 13 – 15, and Aug 20 – 22

The 11:31 PM from Atlantic Terminal will instead depart at 11:51 PM, and the 12:14 AM from Atlantic Terminal will now depart at 12:07 AM.

Hempstead – Suspended

No trains between Jamaica and Hempstead Aug 13 – 14, and Aug 20 – 21, Sat 12:01 AM to Sun 11:59 PM

  • Ronkonkoma Branch trains will stop at Hollis, Queens Village, and Floral Park.
  • For Elmont-UBS Arena, use Belmont Park or Queens Village stations instead.
  • For Bellerose, transfer at Queens Village for bus service.
  • For Stewart Manor, Nassau Boulevard, Garden City, and Hempstead, transfer at Mineola for bus service.
  • There is no service at Country Life Press. Use Mineola or Garden City stations instead.

If you can, use nearby New Hyde Park, Merillon Avenue, or Mineola stations, as bus service will add 30 minutes of extra travel time.

The last trains to operate on Friday night are the 11:36 PM from Hempstead and the 11:44 PM from Atlantic Terminal. Service resumes with the 12:16 AM from Hempstead and 1:49 AM from Atlantic Terminal on Monday morning.

Long Beach – Stations Skipped

Oyster Bay – Boarding Change

All trains to Oyster Bay will depart from Track 3 at Mineola. This is a permanent change now that the tracks have been reconfigured to allow for the new third track.

Port Jefferson – Boarding Change, Boarding Change

At Mineola, you must be in the first eight cars to exit eastbound trains and the last eight cars to exit westbound trains until late 2022

The temporary platforms at the west end of the station are now closed and the eastern eight cars of both platforms have reopened, as renovation work continues as part of the LIRR Expansion Project.

The ticket vending machines on the south side of the station are now located east of 3rd Ave.

You must be in the first six cars to exit at Westbury until late 2022

The temporary platforms at the east end of the station are now closed and the western six cars of both platforms have reopened, as renovation work continues as part of the LIRR Expansion Project.

The pedestrian underpass has also reopened, but the station building remains closed until later this year.

Port Washington – Special Event

All trains stop at Mets-Willets Point until further notice

Ronkonkoma – Boarding Change, Special Schedule

At Mineola, you must be in the first eight cars to exit eastbound trains and the last eight cars to exit westbound trains until late 2022

The temporary platforms at the west end of the station are now closed and the eastern eight cars of both platforms have reopened, as renovation work continues as part of the LIRR Expansion Project.

The ticket vending machines on the south side of the station are now located east of 3rd Ave.

Trains leave up to 5 minutes earlier than normal Saturday and Sunday, Aug 13 – 14, and Aug 20 – 21

Trains will make added stops at Floral Park, Queens Village, and Hollis while Hempstead Branch service is suspended.

West Hempstead – Special Schedule

Trains are extended to Jamaica and will not stop at Valley Stream Aug 13 – 14, and Aug 20 – 21, Sat and Sun, 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM

Westbound trains will leave West Hempstead 37 minutes earlier than normal.
Eastbound customers will need to board trains from Penn Station 22 minutes earlier than normal to connect with West Hempstead-bound trains at Jamaica.

The MTA has put together a guide of its ticket packages for beach excursions. Here’s what to know:

Long Beach

The package includes discounted train tickets to/from Long Beach station, admission to the beach and a City of Long Beach trolley voucher. The package is valid daily through September 5, 2022.

Fire Island Beaches

  • The Robert Moses package includes discounted train tickets to/from Babylon station and Suffolk County Transit bus tickets to/from the beach. The package is valid through September 5, 2022.
  • The Cherry Grove, Fire Island Pines and Sailor’s Haven packages include discounted train tickets to/from Sayville station, round trip taxi vouchers, and round trip Sayville Ferry vouchers. The packages are valid through September 5, 2022.
  • The Ocean Beach, Ocean Bay Park and Kismet/Fire Island Lighthouse packages include discounted train tickets to/from Bay Shore station, round trip taxi vouchers, round trip Fire Island Ferries ferry vouchers and admission to the Lighthouse. The package is valid through September 5, 2022.
  • The Davis Park package includes discounted train tickets to/from Patchogue station, round trip taxi vouchers, and round trip Davis Park Ferry vouchers. The package is valid through September 5, 2022.
  • The Watch Hill package includes discounted train tickets to/from Patchogue station, and round trip Davis Park Ferry ferry vouchers. Please note: the ferry to Watch Hill is located a short walk from the west end of Patchogue station at 160 West Avenue. No taxi vouchers are included. The package is valid through September 5, 2022.

Jones Beach

The Jones Beach package includes discounted rail to and from Freeport station and bus transportation (NICE Bus) to the East or West Bathhouses or the Central Mall at Jones Beach. The package is valid through September 5, 2022.
