NAVI MUMBAI: Former member of legislative council Vinayak Mete passed away after his SUV met with an accident near Bhatan tunnel in Panvel taluka on the Mumbai-Pune expressway about 6km from Palaspe traffic chowkie on Sunday at around 5.30am.
Mete was travelling with his bodyguard and driver in a Ford Endeavour SUV from Beed towards Mumbai for a meeting
PSI Ganesh Burkul of Palaspe traffic unit informed that Vinayak Mete was seated beside his driver Kadam, who crashed into an unidentified vehicle ahead while overtaking from the right side. The SUV’s left side got severely mangled in the crash and caused grievous injuries to Mere. His bodyguard, constable Dhobale and driver Kadam were also injured. Constable Dhobale got stuck in the mangled SUV and was extricated by the highway police. Mete, Dhobale and Kadam were rushed in IRB ambulance to MGM hospital in Kamothe, where he succumbed to his injuries at around 7am.
Vinayak Mere, a leader of the Maratha organisation Shiv Sangram party, was part of BJP led NDA alliance. Deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and BJP leader Pravin Darekar had rushed to MGM hospital Kamothe after learning about Mete’s accident.
