Ganni Unveils An Exclusive Collaboration With Barbour At Copenhagen Fashion Week

The Ganni show is always one of the highlights of Copenhagen Fashion Week, and this season proved no different. Inspired by creative director Ditte Reffstrup’s love of cycling around the Danish capital in the summertime, the SS23 collection was aptly named ‘Joyride’ – and featured a harbour-front catwalk, models in joyous brights, more sustainable fabrics than ever before and even some bicycle stunts.
But beyond showcasing the Scandi summertime wardrobe of dreams, yesterday’s SS23 show had even more surprises in store – chief among them, the announcement of the brand’s collaboration with Barbour. The latest in a long line of exciting Ganni collaborations, Reffstrup and her team worked closely with the British heritage brand for over a year on two collections, which will be available to shop from October.
SHE UK spoke exclusively with Reffstrup ahead of the show to find out all the details. ‘Barbour is one of those iconic brands that I have always dreamed of collaborating with,’ she says. ‘My husband and I have been wearing Barbour jackets for years – they’re something you can always grab and throw on with any outfit. But for me, the most exciting part was collaborating with a brand that is so different aesthetically to my own. We had a lot of fun trying to meet in the middle.’

And meet in the middle they did, with Barbour providing its iconic heritage status and vast archive of classic styles, and Ganni its ‘cool girl’, Scandi aesthetic and sustainable ethos. The result is an exclusive capsule of 50 reworked Barbour jackets – each completely unique.
‘From the beginning we wanted to do something responsible, so we came up with the idea of upcycling and reworking old Barbour styles,’ says Reffstrup. ‘Each jacket is a one-off incorporating fun, modern Ganni design elements. We cut some jackets up to make them cropped, others have denim patches and bright pink collars, and there are also embroidered flowers and butterflies.’
It’s the perfect mix of old and new, iconic and innovative, town and country – the kind of pieces that could be worn by anyone from #GanniGirls Emma Chamberlain and Mia Regan to Dua Lipa, or even longtime Barbour fan, the Queen.
‘One big reference for us was the iconic image of Princess Diana wearing her Barbour with a hoodie and jeans,’ says Reffstrup. ‘It’s exactly the way we would wear it. I love it when people mix and match in unexpected ways. I envision this collection being paired with anything from a feminine dress to a pair of jeans, and everything in between – and always worn with confidence.’
The limited-edition ‘Re-loved’ capsule of 50 Ganni x Barbour outerwear styles will drop in October online, in-store and at Selfridges – while a broader collection is set to be released later in the year, featuring ready-to-wear skirts, jackets and bucket hats.
