RANCHI: The suspense building up over Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren’s political future boiled over on Friday with governor Ramesh Bais still to unbox the EC’s verdict in the office-of-profit case, prompting an anxious JMM to urge both to get it over with and end the uncertainty enveloping the state.
Amid speculation that the EC has recommended Soren’s disqualification as an MLA on charges of holding a mining lease while in office, JMM convened a series of meetings with legislators of the coalition government to weigh its options in the event of the CM having to step down.
JMM central general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya said the party was worried about the state plunging into a constitutional crisis because of rumours swirling about what the EC has recommended and Raj Bhavan’s silence.
“Why this stalemate, which is sending out a wrong message to the masses? We are prepared to face the consequences, if any, because BJP is known to misuse institutions. But our country is still governed by the Constitution,” he said.
The immediate concern for JMM is the possibility of Soren’s disqualification as MLA coming with a bar on him contesting elections for a specific period.
Governor Bais would seek the EC’s counsel and act accordingly, sources said. “The governor is empowered to take a decision on disqualification of members of the state assembly. But before making any decision, the governor has to obtain the opinion of the Election Commission,” said advocate RN Sahay, an expert on legislative procedure.
Soren pesonally appeared unfazed by the hullabaloo surrounding him, attending an event hosted by the Latehar district administration in the picturesque hill town of Netarhat. The two-time CM, whose wife Kalpana is being talked about as a possible proxy if he needs to step aside, declared he wasn’t afraid of “the evil tactics of the opposition”.
“I am the son of a tribal, and our community has not learnt to be afraid of anything. Fear has been wiped out of the DNA of our ancestors because of the repression that they withstood,” he said.
“I am not hungry for power and have no attachments to the chair. My power comes from the love, affection and support which I get from all of you. Now that they are not being able to garner support, they are trying to topple my government.”
Soren said JMM would stand up to the challenge “because if this is not done, they will sell off everything”.
“I will fight with the last drop of my blood,” he declared.
While BJP functionaries continued to tweet about Soren’s imminent disqualification as an MLA, there was silence about the possibility of him being barred from contesting polls.
BJP’s Nishikant Dubey said BJP was ready for a mid-term polls. “Elections are the only option in Jharkhand,” he said, also pointing out that no election was possible in the next six months as the EC would be revising the voters’ list till January 5.
