NEW DELHI: Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was on Saturday sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of India.
Sworn in by President Droupadi Murmu, Justice Lalit will have a 74-day tenure since he retires on November 8.
NV Ramana, who retired from the post of CJI on Friday, had recommended Justice Lalit’s name to the government as his successor. Ramana had expressed confidence that with his long and rich experience in the bar as well as on the bench, Justice Lalit will take the institution of judiciary to greater heights through his able leadership.
Meanwhile, on Friday, Ramana said that the end of his tenure just marks the end of his constitutional assignment, and he would try to fulfil the constitutional vows till his last breath. The farewell function was organised by Supreme Court Bar Association.
During his speech, Ramana also said that he wants to be remembered as a judge who heard the senior and the junior alike and wanted his name to be etched on the hearts of the people through his conduct and behaviour, rather than case law and journals.
Who is Justice Lalit
Born on November 9, 1957, Justice UU Lalit had enrolled as an advocate in June 1983.
After practising for two years in the Bombay HC, he shifted to Delhi in January 1986 and was designated as a senior advocate by the SC in 2004.
Son of former HC judge U R Lalit, he was a preferred amicus curiae by benches of the SC.
The SC bench headed by Justice G S Singhvi had appointed Lalit as the special public prosecutor in the 2G spectrum sale scam cases. He was appointed a judge of the SC on August 13, 2014.
As senior advocate, Lalit had earned a name as a criminal law practitioner like his father UR Lalit. Both practised in the SC.
Sr. Lalit was an additional judge in the Delhi high court when the then Indira Gandhi government had imposed emergency in 1975.
He was among the few bold HC judges who went by the law and defied political pressure to keep granting bail to undertrial political prisoners.
Predictably, the government wreaked vengeance and did not confirm Sr Lalit as an HC judge.
