‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, ‘Raksha Bandhan’ disappoints – Bollywood News UK

Paramount Pictures UK opened the official Bollywood adaptation of Forrest GumpHad Chandan’s Laal Singh Chaddhain a record 350 locations from 11th August during a four-day weekend.

Starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, Laal Singh Chaddha fell short of expectations, although it made it to No.7 on the UK Box Office Chart for the weekend. It collected £411,189.00 from 350 locations (11.07-14.08), with a poor site average of £1,174.83 from its Hindi and Tamil versions.  The film has massively under-performed in India as well as in the UK, considering the extensive marketing campaign and the star-cast involved.

Despite the poor site average, Laal Singh Chaddha has dethroned Paramount’s Gangubai Kathiawadi and is now the highest opener for an original Hindi film at the UK Box Office in 2022.

In comparison, Paramount has previously released Sanjay Leela Bhanasali’s blockbuster Padmaavat (2018) in the UK, which opened in 137 locations, collecting £850,386, with an impressive site average of £6,207. The film went up to earn a total of  £2,186,778 over 13 weeks at the UK Box Office.

Other Indian titles with smaller releases in the UK also had a higher openings such as RRR;  £650,204 from 160 locations, K.G.F Chapter; £588,820 from 160 locations, Beast; £505,648 from 158 locations.

Zee Studios’ Raksha Bandhan starring Akshay Kumar clashed with Laal Singh Chaddha and also under-performed. The film only took £72,608.00 from 111 locations, with a poor site average of £654.13.

DG Tech Ltd. is continuing their dream run for T-Series’ Ek Villain Returns. The film collected £19,025.63 from 13 locations, with an impressive site average of £1,463.51 in its third weekend, higher than the new Hindi releases Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan. The total gross of the film stands at £370,080.87.

Indian epic RRRavailable on Netflix UK, had a re-release in the weekend of 05.08-07.08. The film played in 2 locations this weekend (11.07-14.08) and collected £1,723.00, with a site average of £861.50 bringing the total UK gross to £974,990.00 .

The British Film Institute released Satyajit Ray’s 1963 drama Mahanagar (The Big City) in multiple locations as part of the Satyajit Ray: The Language of Film season. In its fourth weekend, the film earned £385.38 from 4 locations,  with a site average of £96.35. The total gross of the film stands at £18,484.23.
