Kanpur: Putting aside the apprehensions for any untoward event, the city on Tuesday peacefully observed Muharram.
The administration, as asked by higher-ups, was on extra vigil in view of the June 3 violence. Thousands of Sunni and Shia Muslims participated in processions on Tuesday on the occasion of Muharram, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain at the Battle of Karbala.
Processions carrying tazias and black flags with people beating their chests in ceremonial mourning were taken out in various parts of the city. The areas like Badi Karbala Nawabganj, Badi Karbala Gwaltoli and Share Karbala witnessed Muharram processions.
On the occasion of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the national flag was also included in the procession of Muharram along with Alam and Tazia.Anjuman, who took out the procession of Tajiya, was carrying the tricolour flag along with the Alam and Tazia processions.
The Traffic department had restricted the movements of the vehicles in some parts of the city to avoid traffic chaos.
