“We’ve been coming out here for going on 10 years, and again, tonight did not disappoint,” head coach Tom Stone said. “We really enjoy these matches with Denver because they help show us what we need to work on.
“They’re a well-coached team that changes systems throughout the match. We have to take away what areas we were exposed on, but more than anything, we have to be excited about the brand of soccer we played and the dominant attacking style we put together.”
Texas Tech struck first in the 31st minute after Penelope Mulenga fed captain Charlotte Teeter a pass that she was able to put away in the back of the net.
In the 41st minute, the Red Raiders looked to tack on to their lead, firing off back-to-back shots, but could not find the back of the net.
After taking a 1-0 lead into the break, Denver evened the matched just five minutes into the second half of play after netting a goal off a penalty kick.
A defensive battled commence through the remaining minutes of the second half with Tech out shooting the Pioneers just 5-3.
Macy Shultz, Kaitlyn Giametta and Laurie Anne Moise all saw an open look in the final 10 minutes of the match, but Denver keeper Nerea Arrazola stood strong in the net to keep the match tied 1-1.
Texas Tech now turns its attention to Thursday’s season opener against Troy. Kickoff from the John Walker Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
