If there’s one thing Southern California is known for, it’s beautiful coasts and equally beautiful beaches. One downside to such beaches, though, is that they can get incredibly crowded, especially in the summer months. If you’re looking for some beaches a bit more off-the-beaten-path to check out instead, this is the list for you. Here are 7 such beaches in Southern California!
1. Torrance Beach
Torrance Beach, located in the town of the same name, is a gorgeous beach in Los Angeles County. Torrance Beach is easy to access and offers visitors various amenities including showers and restrooms. While it is less well-known than beaches such as Redondo Beach, its location means that it does still draw a good number of people in the summer – this is a great choice for those looking for a clean, generally less busy beach in Los Angeles county, but not such a great choice for those looking for a fully secluded getaway.
2. Thousand Steps Beach
Thousands Steps Beach doesn’t literally require a thousand steps to access, but it does include a pretty steep staircase down to the beach. One perk of the number of stairs, though, is that it somewhat limits the visitors. The trip is also more than worth it – once down there, you’ll be able to explore a beautiful sandy beach, tide pools, and even a cave. The largest portion of the beach is accessible at low tide, so visitors may want to check out when that’ll be when planning their visit.
3. La Piedra State Beach
La Piedra State Beach is a beautiful beach located in Malibu. The most remote of three beaches in Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Park, if you’re looking for a truly off-the-beaten-path beach, this is the option for you. While La Piedra doesn’t offer amenities and does require descending a steep set of stairs to reach, you’ll likely only be sharing the beach with a few other people.
4. El Matador State Beach
El Matador State Beach is another beach in Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Park. While it is a bit more popular than La Piedra, it’s also easily accessible and features some gorgeous rock formations.
5. Stone Steps Beach
This smaller beach in Encinitas is another great option for those looking to get away to a truly off-the-beaten-path location. Similar to Thousand Steps, you’ll descend a steep staircase to reach this beach, but once you’re there, you’ll likely be able to enjoy a fair amount of solitude.
6. Torrey Pines State Beach
For those in the San Diego area, Torrey Pines State Beach can be another great choice to visit. This beach is more popular than some of the others on this list, but there are still often areas that are quieter. It’s also nearby some beautiful hiking trails that can be fun to explore as well.
7. Terranea Cove Beach
This rocky beach was featured in the movie The Lost Boys. Part of Terranea Resort, the beach portion is open to the public, and there is a public access parking lot available as well. The main draw of this beahc is a stunning sea cave, as well as gorgeous views of the ocean. However, the area is pretty rocky – those looking to sunbath may be better off checking out another beach on this list.
