Who is WR Da’Wain Lofton?

Virginia Tech’s wide receiver room lacks experience, but Fort Worth (TX) native Da’Wain Lofton looks to bring some fireworks to the position this fall.

Who is Da’Wain Lofton?

One of the #TX2VT prospects that signed under the previous staff, Da’Wain Lofton was a celebrated player coming out of North Side High School in Fort Worth, especially after his junior season.

As a junior, Lofton recorded 2,022 yards of total offense and 32 touchdowns during the 2019 season. His junior season aided in North Side reaching the playoffs for the first time in four decades.

He was named a Texas AP 5A First-Team All-State selection and was named the district MVP.

During the 2020 season, North Side finished the year with a 7-3 record, reaching the playoffs once again.

As a recruit, Lofton landed 23 verbal scholarship offers. He committed to Virginia Tech in July before his senior season, choosing the Hokies over Colorado, Colorado State, Duke, Indiana, Kansas, Louisville, Mississippi State, Penn State, and others.

In November, TCU, a program he grew up around, extended a scholarship offer and the expectation was that Lofton would eventually flip his commitment from the Hokies to stay close to home, but he opted to sign with Virginia Tech due in large part to his high school coach and his connection to former Virginia Tech Head Coach Justin Fuente.

As a true freshman in 2021, Lofton appeared in 12 games. He recorded seven receptions for 98-yards and one touchdown on the season. He recorded three receptions against Miami for 28-yards and one touchdown. Against Virginia, Lofton recorded the longest reception of his freshman season with a 38-yard catch.

His seven receptions averaged a 14 yards-per-catch average.
