Unity Releases Gorgeous PS5 Tech Demo With Lions

Unity’s latest PS5 tech demo shows what is possible on current generation consoles, and brings excitement to the future of gaming.
Players can now add Unity to the list of game engines showing what is possible on current generation hardware, although the stunning level of detail has yet to be utilized in a full-fledged video game. However, as a result of this tech demo, Unity may suggest that the gaming industry is ready to take the next leap forward.
Unity is a cross-platform game engine that was developed in 2005 by Unity Technologies. It is a public platform that allows developers to create and manage their games, and is responsible for hits such as the Ori series and Cuphead. Studios like Respawn, Atari, and Riot Games have also been known to use this engine. The engine also extends to industries outside of gaming, such as film, engineering, architecture, and even the United States Armed Forces. However, most of its work is seen in virtual reality and mobile gaming, dominating at least half of what is available in their respective markets. Unity is a cutting-edge engine leading video games into the future, and it is more evident now than ever before with its tech demo presenting what is possible on the PlayStation 5.
The tech demo is essentially a 23-second clip of a lion playing with its cub, but what is displayed has players excited about the future. This might be the closest that a game engine has gotten to mimicking reality in its realism, and it may not be far off as a possibility of what’s to come, as the tech demo was made on current generation hardware. Next gen gaming has been criticized in the past for not taking as much of a leap forward in graphics as previous generations, with more of a focus now on performance and load times, although that does not mean that those higher levels of fidelity are not possible.
The current generation of gaming is still in the first quarter of its lifespan, so this gives time for the realism exhibited in the tech demo to be implemented into future games. However, Unity is not without its controversy, as CEO John Riccitiello recently came out in support of microtransactions to keep players coming back through monetization.
The end of the tech demo reveals Unity’s partnership with Weta Digital, Peter Jackson’s VFX studio, and Ziva Dynamics, another recent acquisition responsible for bringing the ultra realism on display to life. As a result of the recent acquisition, Unity is shaping up to stand toe-to-toe with Epic’s Unreal Engine as a building tool for developers of all fields.
