PATNA: The helicopter of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, who was out on an aerial survey in the drought-hit areas of three southern districts, made an emergency landing at Gaya International Airport on Friday after a sudden change in weather, a senior police officer told TOI.
Besides Nitish, four senior officials – CM’s principal secretary Deepak Kumar, agriculture secretary N Sarvana Kumar, disaster management and water resources secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal and officer on special duty Gopal Singh – were on the scheduled aerial survey to take stock of the situation caused due to scanty rainfall in three districts of south Bihar, including Gaya.
“The CM and the four officials left Patna airport around 11.30 am for the scheduled aerial survey of different parts of Jehanabad, Gaya and Aurangabad districts. While they were taking stock of the situation caused due to less rainfall and the poor coverage of paddy plantation in different parts of the three districts, weather suddenly changed and dark clouds covered the sky with modest rain,” a senior official of the chief minister’s office (CMO) told TOI on Friday.
“While returning to Patna airport, the pilot executed an emergency landing at Gaya International Airport due to bad weather,” Vinay Kumar, inspector general of police, Magadh range, told TOI over phone from Gaya.
The CM and the four officials later returned to the state capital by road, taking stock of the paddy plantation in Manpur and Khizarsarai blocks in Gaya district; Islampur, Ekangarsarai, Hilsa and Daniyawan blocks in Nalanda; and Fatuha block in Patna district on way, the CMO official said.
Earlier the CM and the accompanying officials did an aerial survey of Modanganj, Ghoshi and Makhdumpur blocks of Jehanabad district; Atari, Wazirganj, Tankuppa, Mohanpur, Barachatti, Dobhi, Amas, Gurua and Gurari blocks of Gaya district; and Madanpur, Dev, Kutumba, Nabinagar, Aurangabad, Rafiganj and Goh blocks of Aurangabad district, affected by scanty rainfall.
After landing at the Gaya airport, the CM took feedback from the district magistrate about the status of paddy plantation in different areas following less rainfall.
Soon after returning to the state capital, the CM asked the officials to maintain a constant vigil on the situation caused due to less or scanty rainfall in different parts of the state and be prepared to provide necessary assistance to the farmers in the affected areas.
Nitish also asked the officials to expedite the work of providing diesel subsidy to farmers under the concerned scheme.
Besides, he asked the officials to ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity to the farmers for at least 16 hours a day. “The uninterrupted availability of electricity will provide convenience to the farmers in irrigation and the paddy plantation could be saved,” Nitish said.
