MERCHANT NAVY as a Career in Engineering

BTECH Marine Engineering and Graduate Marine Engineering Course requires training on actual ship conditions which is full filled by a Ship in Campus an engineering marvel. This unique branch of engineering requires an awareness amongst the youth.

It is observed that marine engineering seems to be getting better placements and remuneration than the other branches of engineering. In India, there are about a total of 6,214 engineering and Technology Institutions in which about 2.9 million students take admission every year and on an average 1.5 million students graduate. In B.Tech Marine Engineering the total available seats are about 3,500 only. It is further observed that due to lack of awareness the number of applications received for this course is quite low. Hence, it has led to another option being created for students which is GME(Graduate Marine Engineering) which is a one-year course for students having completed 4 years of BTECH Mechanical.

The main advantage of this career is that one enjoys travelling all over the globe and interacting with people of different cultures, ethnicity and race. Salaries received are mostly in foreign currency primarily US dollars which are exempt from taxes too.

IMI being in the maritime industry for almost 31 years and has a good reputation amongst shipping companies by providing every year good quality trained candidates to various shipping companies like MSC, Maersk, Fleet, PIL, Dockendale, V R Maritime, Darya Shipping, V.Ships and many more.

IMI is one of the best maritime institutes in India as it boasts of excellent infrastructure which includes Ship in Campus an engineering marvel which is in a working condition, it’s the only institute in North India with this training aid, extensive workshops setup with recent additions of state of art electronics, instrumentation and control engineering laboratory to cater for training for modern ships, IMI is graded A1 Outstanding by rating agencies, the courses are approved by Director General of Shipping, IMU and AICTE, it conducts both Deck , Engine side of course and also have entered the hospitality/cruise side by forming a joint venture with the world’s largest shipping company MSC.

BTECH Marine Engineering and Graduate Marine Engineering both these courses comprise the study of various systems and controls used on a ship to control navigation and maintain the safety of those on board. It also covers various subjects of ship structure design, and mechanical and electrical engineering for a dynamic approach.

On completion of the course, the student is eligible to join the ship as an Engine cadet and the career journey begins which requires completing a certain amount of sailing time to become eligible for the next promotion. On an average within 8-12 years one is able to grow from Engine Cadet to the top post on the ship of a Chief Engineer who earns a lucrative salary package of about Rs. 4 and above per month

For meeting the basic eligibility for admission into BTech one needs to Pass (10+2) or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60%.

For Graduate Marine Engineering popularly known as the GME course, one needs Graduation in BE (Mechanical) Engineering / Naval Architecture with a minimum mark of 50% in the final year and a minimum of 50% marks in the English language in the 10th or 12th or Degree Exam.
