Udhampur Bus Accident: Passenger Vehicle Plunges into Gorge, Multiple Casualties
A tragic road accident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district has left several people dead and many others injured after a passenger bus veered off a hilly road and plunged into a deep gorge, triggering a large-scale rescue operation. The incident has shaken the local community.
According to officials, the accident occurred on Monday morning near Kagort village in the Ramnagar area. The bus, which was travelling from a remote village towards Udhampur town, reportedly lost control while negotiating a sharp bend on a mountainous stretch of road. It then rolled down a steep slope before coming to a halt after crashing into the gorge below. A sharp bend turned deadly.
Initial reports suggested at least seven people had died in the incident, with several others injured. However, as rescue efforts progressed and more victims were recovered from the wreckage, the death toll rose significantly, highlighting the severity of the crash. Many of the injured were said to be in critical condition, raising fears that the number of fatalities could increase further. The toll continues to rise.
Local residents were among the first to reach the accident site and immediately began rescue operations, pulling survivors out of the mangled bus. Soon after, police teams, emergency responders, and disaster relief personnel joined the effort. The challenging terrain and steep slopes made rescue operations difficult, slowing down the evacuation of victims. Locals led the initial rescue.
Officials said the bus was carrying a large number of passengers, many of whom were daily commuters travelling along the route. The impact of the fall caused severe damage to the vehicle, leaving it badly twisted and making it difficult for rescuers to access those trapped inside. The bus was mangled beyond recognition.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, including Udhampur District Hospital, where emergency medical teams were mobilised to handle the influx of patients. Authorities also explored the possibility of airlifting critically injured victims to better-equipped medical facilities for advanced treatment. Critical patients may be airlifted.
Senior officials and political leaders expressed grief over the tragedy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and announced financial assistance for the victims. Other leaders, including Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister, also assured full support to those affected and directed authorities to provide immediate relief and medical care. National and local leaders respond.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident may have been caused by the driver losing control while navigating a blind curve on the narrow hill road. However, officials have launched a detailed inquiry to determine the exact cause, including whether factors such as overspeeding, road conditions, or mechanical failure played a role. Investigation underway.
Road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir’s mountainous regions remain a serious concern, with steep terrain, sharp turns, and narrow roads often contributing to such incidents. Authorities have repeatedly highlighted the need for improved road safety measures, stricter enforcement of traffic rules, and better infrastructure to reduce the frequency of such tragedies.
